When Starting an Online Business, Cover All of Your Bases
Many people who are new to the internet think that if they throw up a website, the business will come. If only it were really that easy! While your website is the one part of your online business that will be “in the spotlight” so to speak, think of the complete package. While your potential customers are more interested on what is on the outside – the appeal of your online “store”, your products, what your product or service can do for them, there is much going on behind closed doors that your customer never knows about.
Nearly anyone can put up a basic website with all of the templates and website builders available today. It’s also true that nearly anyone can drive at least some traffic to their site through article marketing, blogging, social media, etc. The question is, are the wires, plumbing and all that is going on behind the scenes a strong enough foundation to make your business stand? We’re talking about markup codes, navigation, keyword optimization – how your website is designed in the technical aspects, those things your customers do not realize are there.
To compete in today’s online business world, you need to learn as much as you can about not only the visual aspects of your business, but those “behind the scenes” aspects that may not seem like so much fun. Either that, or hire someone who knows what they are doing to do it for you. The design of your website should be kept up-to-date, so that someone doesn’t arrive at your site to feel like they have arrived at a website from the mid 90s that has never been updated.
It’s also essential to maintain your website frequently, use analytics to see what’s working and what isn’t, and to make sure that your visitors can easily navigate your site. As a “newbie,” all of these things can be overwhelming. Unless you start off with a little bit of knowledge, it is nearly unfathomable that you could learn about all of the different aspects of a successful online business.
A website should demonstrate that your business is a professional one that your potential customer can trust. There are so many scams online today that people are very leery of any website that doesn’t appear to be 100% legitimate. Develop a unique brand for your business and carry it through everything you do from your website and business cards to e-mail messages, brochures and stationery. Don’t think of your business as simply a means to an end – money – think of it as a real business just as you would one that existed in a brick building.
All of this just to say that if you are new to online business, be aware that there is much more to it than what meets the eye. Be prepared to jump in with both feet and learn all you can, or to have someone who is skilled to do part of the work for you if you are eager to get started. Great website design and a little marketing know-how are just the beginning!
